For some people, the word “holistic” sounds merely like another trend that’s caught on and will soon pass. Contrary to this, unlike other words like alternative, complementary and natural, which are different, holistic treatment and healing are here to stay given its benefits in our lives. What this approach does it that it couples physical needs of the body with our feelings and emotions at the same time. It is just as important to heal the tangible or visible aspects of our bodies are well as the other non-physical aspect of complete healing.
The purpose of this approach to medicine is to bring about a positive lifestyle change, dealing with other causes that took the person into the doctor’s consultation room in the first place. It does sound new-age, but the aim is to bring about physical, emotional, spiritual and ultimately, behavioral transformation and health. It starts by identifying the causes of an issue instead of merely dealing with the symptoms as we see in most medical practices.
The patient is given extra attention as the practitioner tries to uncover how non-physical factors, for example, the state of their mind could be contributing to the problem. Some of the techniques that are likely to be adopted are emotional recognition and release or guidance toward a physical connection. Coupled with medication and dietary modification where necessary, what one can expect to find is an improvement in all other aspects of a person’s life, not just their physical health.
As it is known, what is biological is physiological and vice versa. Holistic medicine follows this idea. The question would be are you getting migraines because there’s a biological problem that needs tending to? Or, are these pains as a result of something psychological, like stress from the CRA audit process, which requires tending to. Using this approach you may find that in some cases, medication would not be the cure to the problem but rather the symptom. For a person with migraines they may be, after tests, prescribed painkillers, sleep, exercise, a diet plan and perhaps recommended seeing a therapist. This type of medical care changes the lives of people drastically.
What makes holistic attractive is that its core principles are unconditional love and support are powerful healers, and everyone is responsible for their health and well-being. The primary goal is to also gain proper balance in life when the body, emotions, mind, and spirit are aligned. Medicine practitioners state that a person is made of interdependent parts where failing in one area affects all others. The result would be falling ill. They don’t just treat the disease; they aim to address the cause.
